if any of the national holidays falls on sunday then it is compulsory for the company to give substitute holiday in lieu of that holiday.

NO. The Company or for that matter any one is not obliged to give a holiday in lieu of a national holiday which falls on a normal weekly holiday (say Sunday).

I agree with R. Ramachandran. Also note, if the company is pvt, then they can even curtail the holidays which even come on the working days.

However if the three compulsory National Holidays fall on Sundays will the query hold good at par with the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act?

In some companies, there is a clause/ limitation for no. of holidays in a year (Other than weekly holidays).
So, automatically it shall be compensatd.

Common sense says no but we have to verify it from N.I.Act.

Dear Mr. Arun,
Notification under N.I. Act will only declare a particular day as public holiday. But such notification will not speak about any compensatory holiday to be granted on a week day in lieu of a national holiday falling on a weekly holiday.
