Blackmail

is blackmail a crime? somebody is blackmailing me saying that they would pass on sensitive private information to someone else. what should i do? should i wait till he actually passes on the information, as many claim that it could be just empty threats?

yes . its a crime . dont bow down to their demands . they will keep on extorting money from you .
