Dual name of same person

(Querist) 02 July 2013 This query is : Resolved
My name throughout my academic documents was entered without surname, as mentioning surname along with name was optional at that time.Subsequently I applied for job with my name without surname in order to be consistent with the name appearing on my educational certificates.Accordingly in my service records my name has been consistently used without surname and it perfectly matches my name appearing on my educational degrees. However, for a long time I have been situated in a region where mentioning surname is the usual practice while writing names. So I happened to mention my surname which never appears either on my certificates or on my father's certificates. As a result, quite incidentally in some records outside my service records, my name figures with my surname . Now I am applying for a passport. Now as per my academic certificates, I am obliged to write my official name without surname as appearing on my educational documents. However, can I mention MY NAME WITH SURNAME ADDED as alias or is it that alias refers only to first name and to the whole name ? A fictitious example is given below:
Suppose official name was: Amit Kumar
Name after adding surname: Amit Kumar Sinha.
So can one say that Amit Kumar Sinha is an alias of Amit Kumar.(This name is fictitious for example only)
Please advise me.

As there is a separate column for sirname in passport form so it can definitely be mentioned there though it may not appear in your academic certificates.

The name which appears in your matriculation will be considered for the passport purposes. The passport office is very particular about this. So whatever name you have in that certificate, in only that name passport will be issued.
If you want to add surname, then you have to get the matriculation certificate changed
or give a paper advertisement to this effect and then proceed with the passport application.

Why do you invite problems? Continue your official name as appeared in your academic records.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GETTING A PASSPORT WITHOUT ANY DIFFICULTIES, BETTER USE THE NAME WHICH IS IN YOUR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE AND OTHER OFFICIAL RECORDS.

IN CASE YOU WANT TO EXPERIMENT AND WANT TO GET INTO DIFFICULTIES IN GETTING THE PASSPORT, YOU DO WHATEVER THAT YOU WANT TO DO.

More than the specific query here, there is a larger problem. It is not mandatory that a person should have a surname. In fact, there is no law how a person's name should be. However, in many parts parts of the country a person is compelled to discover or invent a surname.

Even the website of 'Lawyersclub' has fallen to this trap. I am unable to change my profile to incorporate changes since my retirement as my name is too short without the surname.
