Butyro Refractometers. The Butyro Abbe Refractometer is used for measuring on oils, fats and waxes giving a reading directly in terms of the oil scale, otherwise known as BUTYRO Scale. The micrometer eye piece allows accuracy on their scale of 0.1. The soil scale may also be conversion tables. This allows measurement on materials with index of refraction in the range 1.42 to 1.49 to an accuracy of 0.0002.

Ghee is extracted from milk by centrifuging about some milk in centrifuge for 5 minutes and creamy layer is separated and melted and heated and ghee is prepared. Few drops of melted ghee is poured on clean prism of butyro-refracto-meter and closed gently and allowed to stand for 1 minute. The reading is noted at 40°C. If B.R. reading comes in the range of 40 to 45 then only milk is accepted otherwise rejected.
