for how long does a person need to be absent from the property to lose rights permanently in case of joint possession?

In joint possession there is no question of loosing possession. It is 13 years for adverse possession, not joint possession.

Art 65 of limitation act prescribes that the possession of the defendant becomes adverse to the plaintiff if he is in exclusive possession for continuously 12 years to the knowledge of the true owner
