First of all it seems like you are not purchased the motor vehicle on safer side. what about the Registration & other certificates? Are you transferred in your Name according to the MV Act? As per the act you need to transfer the vehicle in your name according to submission of Form no 29 & 30 before registering authority.

You transfer the vehicle by submitting the form No. 29 & 30. You take the letter from the purchaser that he has purchased the scooter from you and necessary documents are executed to get transfer it in his name. And in case of any accident or it is misused he would be held responsible and to get transfer the insurance of the vehcile is his responsibility.
After taking this you submit the copy of the same to the RTO and insurance co.,

The vehicle should belong to you on registeration papers as per MV Act.

Since you hve not regisered it it still belongs to original owner and if lost only he will claim insurance money and not you.
