Medical bills exemption

Sir,
I would like to know that can an employee claim deduction under 80d for his parents medical expenses, who is not dependent. if employee claims, to claim what proof he has to submit. Kindly clarify sir

As his parents are not dependant over him, such employee cannot claim for the exemption in their medical bills.

The finance Act was amended and henceforth deduction u/s.80D can also be claimed for parents who are not dependent on their children.

An employee can not claim deduction u/s 80 D for for his parent medical Exp. who is not dependent . If parents is dependent then submit certificate issued by Insurance Company with Return.

Those who claim that the deduction cannot be claimed substantiate with relevant provision of law.

The word "dependent" has been withdrawn from 01.04.2009 by the Finance Act, 2008
