The police are required to carry out proper investigation. If you are convinced that the they are lethargic, you may move the jurisdictional Magistrate under CrPC 156(3).
Advocate. Arunagiri (Expert) 23 November 2015
File a petition u/s 482 cr.p.c. in the High Court directing the police to complete the investigation and file the final report/charge sheet within three months. By this the police will expedite their investigation.

In the mean time you may use RTI to know the status of the investigation. By this also the police will speed up their inquiry.

Once FIR is lodged, police would complete investigation.

You may approach High Court for appropriate orders.

Cases are time consuming.
