You got a wrong information, file SLP and appear before the particular bench, in person, however, you can avail an opportunity before High Court (in writ jurisdiction)for imminent danger to life.
Sudhir Kumar, Advocate (Expert) 14 April 2014
agreed with Dr Vashishta
Devajyoti Barman (Expert) 14 April 2014
You can appear in person but for that you have to file a case first praying for necessary reliefs.

One can appear before the court for his own case, but it is always advisable to take the assistance of some lawyer.

Advised properly by experts, I personally feel that you take assistance of a lawyer though you prefer to appear as party in person.
