Magistrates are of two kinds:

one is “Executive Magistrate” who is responsible for maintenance of law and order and tranquility as per chapter 10 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and

the other is Judicial Magistrate who presides over the criminal court and carries out its criminal judicial functions.

District Magistrate, called as DM, is chief Executive Magistrate in the district. This function is normally assigned to the District Collector. He will have Additional and Subordinate Executive Magistrates under him to perform such functions.
