Dictionary meaning of petition and application is almost the same. It is the legislature which has used these terms in a variety of manner in different statutes including the constitution. e.g. An application filed U/A 32,226 or 227 of the Constitution is called as a Writ Petition. An application for Divorce is called as a petition for divorce. Application u/s 125 of Cr.PC is called as an Application.riven

writ petition means an order or direction given by H.C or S.C. Criminal application is just an application related to some crime.
