Intellectual property rights is a legal concept that confers rights to owners and creators of the work, for their intellectual creativity. Such rights can be granted for areas related to literature, music, invention etc, which are used in the business practices. In general, the intellectual property law offers exclusionary rights to the creator or inventor against any misappropriation or use of work without his/her prior knowledge. Intellectual property law establishes an equilibrium by granting rights for limited duration of time.

IPR includes copyright, Trademark, Patent, Geagraphic Indications, Company secrets, Machine Designs...

R.Ramachandran (Expert) 16 September 2010
Dear Mr. Chandra Shekar,
Intellectual property is the outcome of human intellect. If one man's intellectual outcome is not protected but is allowed to be freely used by others, then the motivation for indulging any creative activity or inventions will not be there. Therefore, in order to encourage the creative activities and inventions through human intellect, there is a need to protect such intellectual property rights.
However, in respect of each of the intellectual property rights, specified time has been prescribed during which period there will be protection. Thereafter the intellectual property will come into public domain for all to use.
Currently, copyright, patents, trademarks, industrial designs, geographical indications, layout-design of integrated circuits and undisclosed information which include trade secrets are treated as IPRs and get IPR protection.

I concur with Mr.Arvinthan and Mr.Ramachandran. There is Intellectual Property Right Tribunal and Appellate Tribunal for protecting the rights. You can also approach the regular courts in common law for infringement of intellectual property rights.
