Regarding cancellation of engagement

My engagement is over 3 months back. But found the girl is not a good charactered. Wanted to cancel engagement, is there any legal problems due to that. I have not collected any dowry or any gifts from the bride family.

if your engagement has been cancelled and your ex fiancee has till date not lodged any complaints against you then you cna relax . in addition as you have not collected any gifts dont forsee any problem .

There is no legal way the elders who fixed the engagement shall communicate to the other side that they dont wish to continue and return any belongings that were exchanged between both sides.

There is no legal barrier to cancel the engagement.
Instead of you personally telling the girl regarding breaking the relation, it will be better to convey the message through your parents to her parents to avoid more issues.
If you tell them the reason is bad character, then you should be armed with strict proof. Otherwise you can face criminal charges for defamation.
If you had any sexual intercourse with the girl during the engagement period, then that will go against you. If not, then everything is OK from your part.

Cancellation of engagement alone does nto give rise to any cause of action for legal proceeding except suit for damages which is mostly not done.
Since you have not accpeted any dowry items then there is nothing to worry for harassment out of your refusal.

You say that there is a risk of allegation regarding demanding dowry.
You cannot be booked on mere allegation. They have to provide strict proof.
If you have proof regarding her bad character as stated above, then that will be a strong defence for you if they initiate any action against you.

Thanks to God. You have not reached to marriage, people not affraid even to break the marriages and you fear to cancel the engagement. Now a days its very minor and very easy for some peoples in the society. Who cheats whom ? God knows. Do not make allegations ? Refuse polietly is the best way for both parties.
