I would like to know whether on dishonor of a cheque statutory notice is mandatory for filing a civil suit

YES. STATUTORY NOTICE MUST BE GIVEN WITHIN 30 DAYS INTIMATING THE DISHONOUR,

For filing civil suit,it is not essential to give notice to drawer but for filing complaint for the offence u/s 138 of N.I.Act it is mandatory to give notice to drawer within 30 days of dishonour of cheque.

It is not mandatory to serve notice but it shall be good if a notice is served so that the necessary litigation may be avoided.
