Landlord not allowing me to move out..using force

(Querist) 26 September 2011 This query is : Resolved
I have been living in a rented house for the last 18 months. The landlord did not issue any agreement even upon repeated insistence on my part. He also does not issue any rent receipt. On 9th of September he asked me to move out to which I gladly agreed because I was fed up with his wife's behavior.(amounting to verbal abuse.)
Now that I have found a new place to live and moving out in reality he wants me to stay for another month(October) so that he can find replacement tenant. I refused. He says he will not allow me to move out my luggage and belongings unless I pay him rent for October.
I told him there is no agreement and I have no legal obligation. He says he will keep the main gate locked unless I pay him rent for October. He is also threatening to have me beaten up by local goons if I don't submit to his demands.

The Packers & Movers are coming tomorrow and I don't know what to do. I am feeling tremendously harassed and insecure. The verbal abuse is unbearable. Please advise.

you have stayed in rented premises for 18 months . legally he cannot force you to stay in rented premises as no agreement has been made in writing . in addition since you make payment in cash no rent receipts are issued . you are free to leave when you desire . if he refuses permission you cna lodge police complaint against him .

but if you want to part on amicable note agree to his request and stay for a month

Yes the act of the landlord amounts to wrongful restraint and wrongful confinement which both are grave criminal offence.
So lodge complaint with the police without any delay.
