In house lawyer

(Querist) 05 May 2010 This query is : Resolved
Respected all,
Since long there is a contradiction in my mind that though I am a qualified lawyer and a company secretary (in c.s final only 4 papers pending)yet i have not registered myself in any bar council. Rather i am not interested in practice. Since last 4 years I have been working in reputed listed company as Asst. Manager - Corporate Affairs and my area of work is mainly corporate law (Companies Act, SEBI, Property Act etc) Beside this i have also the experience of drafting various agreement like Joint Venture agreement, Lease, property management agreement, construction agreement, Scheme of merger etc and liasioning with the solicitors, financial institutions, auditors etc. I am very much interested in legal work and have zero interest in finance work. Now as i have confessed that though i am a qualified legal professional yet dont have any court experience. In a word i mainly perform as in house legal advisor. If i continue this way would it hamper my growth. Is my experience and nature of job as a legal executive o.k? If i go for any changes then may the new company(s) refuse on the ground that i dont have any court experience. I have tried to get a positive answer from my seniors. At present I am sharp 30 yrs. I consider you all to be most experienced person in this field and will definitely be able to guide me.
Kindly reply.
Best regards,

Being a inhouse lawyer will not hamper your growth. All you need is now to update yourself with the latest judgments on the field of your work and constant updating your knowledge will help you in succeeding to become a good inhouse counsel. Though court practice is expected from law candidates by many companies if you are able to show that you possess sufficient knowledge of the legal procedure/system then you can win the job.

I find many law graduates working in corporates who have no exposure to court practice(like you) but they are succeeding well in their corporate field. It is because they update their knowledge well everyday and learn the legal procedures of the court.

Infact this site is one such wonderful place to learn many legal issues and procedures. I am also a corporate lawyer like you and I am constantly learning many things from this site and from other learned members/experts.

Best of luck.....

Lawyers have many opportunities now. It is not necessary to take up litigation. It is said that students pursuing law in reputed institutions are reluctant to take up litigation side as it is time consuming to make a mark and earn money. Since, there are so many opportunities on the corporate sector these days, having a hierarchy of posts with good pay scale, these students prefer employment to practice.

Respected all thanks U all for such valuable advises which have in fact made me free of all the negative thinkings. Kindly do one more favour. Pl suggest is it possible to get registered / licensed with Bar Council at the same time while in service, but i shall never engage in legal practice. I have asked the BAR of Kolkata but they have replied that it is not possible.
Kindly advise.
Rgds,
