daughter's right to father's property

Can someone kindly enlighten me on the folowing?
what was the law/Act prevailing before 1956 with reagard to right of daughters in father's intestate property?
Some say daughters had equal right in father's intestate property and some say daughters's could get only 1/4 th of sons share or Rs5000/- whichever is less as per Sucession Act,1925?
if it is equal share under whcih law/ Act existing prior to 1956 and under which section it is stated so?
If both are incorrect which was the applicable law/Act and what does it sstate?

1. Whether the property is 'ancestral property' or self-acquired property of your father.
2. What is your family strength - i.e. father, mother, son(s), daughter(s).
3. When did your father die?
4. Whether your mother is alive?
5. Where is the property situated?
6. If it is ancestral property (and not self-earned property of your father) then please also indicate whether the daughter(s) are married and if so when did they get married.
On knowing the above information, I will give you the answer to your query.

1)The property is a residential house situated in Andhra Pradesh.the property was purchased in the year 1946.The document is in the name of our father .It is not clear from the document from which funds he purchased it.so iam nt sure whether it is ancetral or self aquired
2)Our father died in the year 1948.
3)Our father when expired left behind him our mother, two sons and two daughters all were minor by that time.
4)Mother expired in the year 2006.
5)Our sisters got married in the year 1953 and 1955 respectively.
6)In view of the uncertanity of the nature of the proeprty I made a requet for the status under both the alternatives
My father died in the year 1948 and did not execute any will.Sicne our mother was living till 2006 the house was kept in tact.MOther experied in 2006 and till 2011 the property was in some rental dispute.
