Yes, law does not make discrimination is usage of object of defence.

Steps taken for one's safety by him /her are legal irrespective of male or female. Such steps should be taken within legal frame.

Still the male cannot be safe. The lady can definitely say that it was she who was actually carrying the pepper spray but the male snatched it from her and then applied the same to create a false case in his defence!! The lady's version would be believed.

Who know from whom danger, the man has sprayed the pepper? So reply as given by an expert anticipating the facts is not trustworthy.
