A relative recently deserted her husband; she is in procession of the mangalsutra. Do she have the legal right to it Thanks in advance

She has only deserted her husband and therefore has every right to continue to wear it. Even if she is divorced she is entitled to keep it with her as part of her stridhana property.

Mangal sutra is not a legal equipement. It is an ornament tied in recognition of a marriage under certain customs. Marriages are performed without mangalsutra also. So desertion and removal of mangalsutra has no bearings on the couple. It is the desire and the wish they cherish. Now there is no guarantee that they will not re unite. As far as the possession of this ornament is concerned it will remain with the wife otherwise you had an agreement on desertion
