Sorry for being ignorant on the subject but what is the legal process of obtaining divorce under muslim law...is saying talaq thrice acceptable or is thier any other official way to do so

Talaq Ahasan can be pronounced 3 times, only once in a menstrual cycle of the wife so as per Quranic dictate a Talaq will take place only after 3 months. In Talaq-e-Bidaat some schools of Islamic jurisprudence opine that 3 Talaqs in a row make the Talaq effective which is against the dictate of Quran. In such cases all the 3 Talaqs are considered one by majority of schools of Islamic jurisprudence. Nothing is above Quran and Sunnah. So follow Sura Nisa and Sura Talaq of Quran to seek the solution of your problem. After completion of the Talaq you can get it registered with the local Qazi. Communication of Talaq to wife is a must. To enforce Talaq-e-Ahsan, you have to face the ordeal of all the tough preconditions of Talaq as told in Quran. Moreover, after pronouncement of 1st Talaq, you can revert back to your wife and in that case if there is any physical relation the 1st Talaq will automatically become null and void.
