Is payout for surplus solar energy units taxable?

Querist : Anonymous (Querist) 14 October 2026 This query is : Resolved
We have solar panels installed at our house. State of Punjab has started the payout for surplus solar energy units, for the first time, this financial year.

Is payout for surplus solar energy units produced by such solar panels, treated as taxable income, for residential consumers?

Sorry for being anonymous, but it is important.
Quick Summary
In Punjab, payouts for surplus solar energy units sent back to the grid are generally considered taxable income if received as a direct cash deposit into your bank account. However, if the surplus energy simply reduces your electricity bill through a billing credit, it's not treated as taxable income. While government subsidies for installing solar panels are tax-free, you may be able to offset operational expenses against the taxable payout by consulting a chartered accountant.

Under the Indian Income Tax Act, 1961, the treatment of payouts received for surplus solar electricity generation depends on whether it is a billing credit adjustment or a direct cash payout deposited into your bank account.
When surplus power generated by your residential solar panels is exported to the grid (PSPCL in Punjab) and simply credited against your monthly electricity bills to reduce your out-of-pocket consumption expense, it is not treated as taxable income. Decreasing a personal expense does not constitute an income-generating event under income tax laws.
PM Surya Ghar / Government Subsidies: Any upfront capital subsidy received from the Central or Punjab State Government for setting up the rooftop plant is treated as a tax-free capital grant and is not taxable.
Standard Deduction / Expenses: Since you incur operational expenses (maintenance, depreciation, repairs) to produce that electricity, consult a chartered accountant (CA) to evaluate if reasonable operational costs or proportional expense deductions can be offset against this income under Section 57 of the Income Tax Act when filing your Indian Income Tax Return (ITR).

I had actually inquired about having the surplus solar energy units offset as billing credit adjustment, as negative balance. However, they are only insisting upon crediting the payout for the surplus solar energy units to the bank account.

From the above reply, I infer that crediting the payout for surplus solar energy units into the bank account of the consumer would be treated as taxable income.

When surplus solar generation reduces your monthly electricity bill to zero or carries forward as a unit balance, you are simply saving money on a personal expense (which is not taxable).
Once PSPCL issues a cash payout directly to your bank account, the Income Tax Department views this as monetary income derived from an asset (your rooftop solar plant).
For a residential consumer, this payout falls under "Income from Other Sources" (IFOS) under Section 56 of the Income Tax Act. It must be declared in your Annual Return (ITR-1 or ITR-2) and will be added to your gross total income, taxed at your slab rate.
Thus be aware that under Indian Income Tax law, your inference is fundamentally correct: a cash transfer deposited into your bank account is treated differently from a simple bill adjustment.
