I got engaged on November 16. After that I came to know that she has some problems like short temper, indecent behavior, using abusive language, e.t.c When we tried to check about her official behavior to colleagues, it was very negative and she had multiple affairs in the office itself. After that we talked to her parents and said we need to rethink about the decision. Ours was a very decent approach, but those people started shouting on us and girl threatened me that she will suicide. Even her father threatened me to kill my family, if something happens to her girl. We had several meetings; at last they have asked 2.5 Lakhs as compensation. We negotiated and settled on an amount of Rs.175000. No agreement was made about that settlement. When we approached with DD of Rs.175000 after one week, they have changed their decision. Now they are asking Rs.5 Lakhs and threatening us, if you will not pay we will go legally. We are middle class and we can’t afford such a big amount. Neither we nor they have any written document that we are willing to marry each other. Only photographs and video of ring exchange ceremony is there. My doubt is, can they sue me for dowry, defamation or compensation. If so how much time it will take to settle? What is the duration of the case if we will go for case? Can police arrest me if they complain? Please help me, am depressed and taking sleeping pills these days. Thanks in advance

You have done a great mistake by agreeing to their demand of money.
Now you should remain as once beaten twice shy.
The girl side may file case and only tenable case may lie for dowry demand but you have proof of disproving their claim then nothing to worry.
To protect yourselves from any such flase cases I thing you should take counter measures like lodging complaint in the Police for criminal intimidation and defamation and on this basis you should start criminal case as well.

@devajyoti barman.. thanks for ur immediate reply.. as i said earlier.. we were planning for a non provoking situation, where both the parties mutually agrees on each other. now we made it clear that we are not going to pay anything. if we start legal formalities from our side, will it be beneficial for future??? advice the best way of complaint.

Don't Pay anything.
She is neither your wife, nor in live-in-relation, and cannot file 498, or anything. Once negotiated, only money claim remained in dispute,
Any contract , for payment of illegal demand, is void , non payable.
She mus have already collected this way from many other boys, as you claim her relationship in office.
Very dangerous girl. God helped you, otherwise, u had it.
To break engagement alone is no offence.

The ideal thing would be to pay back the money they would have spent on the engagement. This looks appropriate but the reason for their resentment or anger is the fact that the girl has to suffer socially for a broken engagement and is looked down irrespective of the reasons of breaking. The facts that you enquired now should have been enquired before the engagement as a Man can still get married easily but women have a impact of these breakage. The enquiry that you made may be based on hearsay and may be incorrect.
whatever be the reasons though if there were any gifts that they gave in the engagement should be returned back and a written confirmation taken by you.
Compensation is for the expense they made on the arrangements that need to be agreed mutually.
Dont be afraid and dont act in pressure and stick to what amount was agreed and try to evidence the same through a written agreement when you pay or the nagotiations if happen on phone record them.
In order to take revenge they can definately file a complaint to police complaining Dowry demand and cancellation of marriage for non agreeing by them to your dowry demands.
