can girl's family file a dowery case, just after engagement. marriage date is still not fixed,
girl's family is very demanding and dominating .I want to breakoff from this engagement.kindly suggest the legal aspect of breaking off the engagement.
girl's family is threatening us of legal consequences.

Section 3 & 4 of DP Act is applicable even at the stage of engagement so if your would be in-laws decide to take action against you under those sections, none can stop them.
Pran (Querist) 01 February 2012
there is nothing that they can show they have given to us , engagenent happened on 30th jan ,and they gave a sivercoin 500 rs and suit cloth for me,actually they were expecting more from our side they were not happy about the gold that we gave to the girl.how can we protect ourself.

there must be a video recording of the engagement . even when gifts were exchanged there must be photographs taken .

send emails to your fiancee thanking them for giving you silver coin of rs 500 and suit . do not mention any thing about cancellation of engagement . dont be in a hurry to fix a marriage date .

Dear Pran
if it is real and you are not ready to marry, send the copy of this incident to your nearest police station and also send the copy of the same to CJI, Chief minister of your state. you can also file a case against them u/s 3/4 DP Act.
feel free to call

Naddem! There is no need to highlight such minor issue at such large scale. It shall earn insult for both families. Generally seniors from both sides handle such situation amicably. Do not raise such matters publically.

resolve issues amicably.
