Increase in Insurance Premium

(Querist) 22 December 2010 This query is : Resolved
My wife has taken a Health wise policy from reliance Genral Insurance under Gold Plan for policy coverage of Rs.3,00,000/- and was paying Rs.2700/- approx. She has not made any clim since inception of the policy from Last two years. She has now received a renewal notice of Rs.15000/- after 15% discount aginst last year of Rs.2700/- I called the customer service to show me some sort of evidence justifying the premium but the replied that IRDA has increased and they cannot show me any circullar. I want to know how I can find out wether the premium under renewal notice is correct ? What happens if I do not pay the premium ? What are the options open for me to make enquiry to IRDA or any other Govt agencies. Is it possible that till the time I make my enquiies and the due date elapses the policy remins in force.

Approach the insurance ombudsman in your state and lodge a complaint against the company, it is the cheapest and effective remedy to treat the errant company.

It would be a better option to write to IRDA using RTI raising queries covering your concern.

meanwhile, pay the premium to keep the policy in force. You will get the refund later on if the premiums has been charged violating any norms in this regard.

I have written to irda and they have allothed me a number and also written to Reliance Health who has replied that because of increase in cost they have increased the premium which I find totally illogical to increse the premium from RS.2700 per anum to RS. 15000/- per anum. I wonder wether irda and Insurance Ombdusban is same and I have written to irda and when should I approach Insurance Ombusband

Dear piyush,

RTI means right to information act 2005.

Since, you have wrote to IRDA (as I do not know the full text of the same,I will not be able to help in drafting a letter),you may raise an rti query to IRDA.

For getting detailed guidance in using rti,you may visit rtiindia.org
