Film prequel rights

sir i want to make a film and would like to publicity that my film is prequel to a old hit film. Did i need to take any rights form the old hit film maker.

It would be better to take permission to avoid controversy. If copyright has been registered, then it is mandatory.

It is not only desirable but also legal requirement to seek permission in writing as it involves royalty rights which is penal too.

You shall have to obtain prior written permission after duly paying them their royalty amount in advance as per their terms and conditions.

Yes, I also agree that prior permission from the copyright holder is a must before embarking on any such proposed venture.
