(Querist) 24 March 2016 This query is : Resolved
I and the guy whom I want to marry are related to each other as follows: his mother and my maternal grandmother(my Nani or my mothers mother) are real sisters.what I want to know is are we sapindas as per Hindu marriage act??or are we covered under any provision for prohibited relationship as per Hindu marriage act?or does clause which states prohibited relationship between uncle and niece also includes a maternal uncle(I.e my moms cousin)or does it only includes my moms real brother.kindly answer my questions with provisions .I will be highly oblidged.

as per query, his mother and your grandmother (nani)are own sisters, so his relation with you is mama(maternal uncle). Some communities in Hindu religion permit marriage between maternal uncle and niece. hence it may not come under prohibited degree. Confirm whether it is permitted in your case.in my opinion, the marriage may not be illegal.

under the mentioned relationship, I think you can get married.

The relationship between mama and neice is permitted only in the states of Tamil Nadu.AP and karnataka, though genetically not recommended by medical experts. Otherwise it is sapinda relationship.

"Sapinda relationship" with reference to any person extends as far as the third generation (inclusive) in the line of ascent through the mother, and the fifth (inclusive) in the line of ascent through the father, the line being traced upwards in each case from the person concerned.
