Dear Experts,
One of my friends submitted RTI application to the SPIO of a Public Authority seeking some information. He got a reply requesting to submit the purpose for which the information is sought for should be produced. As per Sec.6(2) of the Act purpose of the seeking information need not be indicated. I am told that there is High Court judgement to this effect. I do not know whether it is correct or not.
I will be thankful if it is informed whether there is any supreme court of India or any other HC judgements or any rulings from DOPT or CIC etc. on the above topic i.e., purpose for which the information is sought for shall be produced.

What is expressly provided and sated in simple terms need not be supported by any decision. The law clealy states that the reason need not be shown.

Purpose can not be asked. The response of PIO amounts to denial of information. You should file an appeal.
