Dear Mr. Joshi,
In Trade Marks law, invented words constitute the best kind of trade mark, since it is capable of distinguishing any goods or services. Though invented word is not specifically included in the definition of mark, it is of the utmost imortance to the pharmaceutical industry which has the largest number of invented words as brands.
There are certain principles to be aplied in the determination as to whether a word is an invented word or not.
Invented words may be coined in many ways. One way is to take the first letters of the words forming the name and joining themtogether.
Another method is to take a descriptive word and add a suitable prefix or suffix to it or delete certain letters from the word.
A third method is to take two words, jointhem together and then drop a few lettes or add a few letters so as to make it readable as a single word.
Some of the examples of invented/coined words:
Compugraph ... Computer Graphics
Frumato ... Fruit + tomato
Bitumetal ... Bitumen + metal
Glucoda .... Glucose + soda
Odonil ... Odour + nil
Rumaica ... Rum+Jamaica
Dropovit ... Drop of vitamin
Thermawear ... Thermal wear
Primasport - coined word for sports wear.
There are absolutely no restrictions in the use of Coined words to name a Company. Rather it would be preferable since it will be very difficult to imitate.
