You can register any type of contract with registrar where generally sale deed of property are registered. That is office or registrar. in small towns it is generally Tehsildar. In ahemedabad there may be a complete dedicated office of registrar of deeds.

A contract document like any other instrument can be got registered with the Registering Officer appointed under the Registration Act, 1908.
Gaurav Agarwal (Querist) 08 November 2010
Dear Praveen

Thanks for the reply, will be obliged if you could let me know what all Registering Officer have been appointed under Registration Act, 1908 in Ahmedabad? Is Notary one of them?
Parveen Kr. Aggarwal (Expert) 08 November 2010
Notaries are appointed under the Notaries Act, 1952 and are not empowered under the Registration Act, 1908 to register any instrument. Registering officers are appointed by the State Governments to perform the functions under the Registration Act. In some of the States, Revenue Officers are appointed Registering Officers to discharge such functions in addtion to their duties as Revenue Officers.
Arul Kumar (Expert) 18 November 2010
Agree with Shri. Parvneen.
Sri Vijayan.A (Expert) 20 November 2010
Now, no revenue officers are discharging the functions except fixation of value of property when there is a difference in the values fixed by the claimant and the sub registrar.
HEnce, for this question, sub-registrar is competent to register the contract agreement.
Regarding the stamp duty, u have consult the registrar concerned.
Gaurav Agarwal (Querist) 21 November 2010
Dear Experts

Thanks for reply.

I have taken advice of few experts in Ahmadabad they have suggested for all practical purposes a notarized contract is as good as registered contract and instead of registration we should get it notarized. Please advice.
Parveen Kr. Aggarwal (Expert) 08 December 2010
Even a contract not notarised is equally good and enforceable.
