Jurisdiction of legal services authority

Querist : Anonymous (Querist) 16 July 2021 This query is : Resolved
Can a legal services authority of one state grant compensation to a victim of a crime, when the crime has occurred in another State?
Quick Summary
This discussion explores whether a Legal Services Authority (LSA) in one state can compensate a victim whose crime occurred in a different state. While LSAs provide legal aid, their jurisdiction for victim compensation is typically limited to the state where the crime took place. In this specific case, a family seeking compensation from their resident state's LSA for a crime committed elsewhere was denied due to jurisdictional issues, highlighting the need to apply to the LSA in the state where the crime was registered.

Dr J C Vashista (Expert) 17 July 2021
Legal Service Authority is created by an Act of Parliament to provide legal aid to weaker section of society and similar functions as provided therein.
However, Lok Adalat conducted by the LSA may take up such case which may decide the case as acceptable to both parties.
Question of providing compensation to a victim in a criminal case depends upon facts of the case, which may not be covered under the provisions of LSA Act, 1986.
Relevant facts are missing from the post.
