I owned a Standard Chartered credit card some more than 10 years ago and had defaulted to pay them due to unavoidable reasons, I was then contacted by a collection agency and harassed by them at odd hours, at one time I clearly remember them coming to my house at mid-night, I kept paying how much ever I could and till as long as I could and eventually could not pay anymore, they kept calling and at some point I got fed-up and frustrated and I stopped picking the calls. My last transaction of paying them was on 04.04.2003 where I was issued a letter stating that my dues were clear and settled for my card. I also had an add-on card which was for my wife and was misled that this card dues were also settled and cleared but the number of the add-on card was not mentioned on the letter which I overlooked at that time.
After that there has no written communication from my end. In the year 2007 some legal dept from Delhi calls me and threatens to sue me so I faxed him the settlement letter on 14.02.2007 and I spoke to him where he said that he will close my account. I was not convinced with his reply and asked him to give me a writing that my dues are settled to which he said he will and never replied back, so I called them back on 12.06.2007 and got to know that the gentleman I was talking to has resigned so I spoke to another representative about the same and he assured me that he is finally closing my account.
Now after so many years a collection agency calls me and demands me to pay the dues I would not say he was very polite but he did not use any abusive language nor any threat, but kept calling me defaulter all the time, not only that he tells me that even my card is due plus he gives me 2 more card numbers which are due out of which one must be of my ex-wife and one they must have been renewed to me with a different number for some reason at that time.
I did talk to them and told them saying that I have cleared all my dues through settlement a long time ago and I don’t owe anything to the credit card company and asked them to stop calling me and harassing me and mentally torturing me again and again. They refused to acknowledge and are demanding a fax copy of the same which I don’t have any more or may really have to search for it. I did take his address and fax number and told him that I will fax it to him and in my entire conversation with them I have never mentioned that I had dues to pay. He demanded that the fax should be on his table by 12 noon tomorrow like I was some peon or some employee to which I told him talk nicely as his tone was very, very rude and that I am not your servant and with this conduct of your I will not comply with anything. What do I do next? How do I get these guys off my back? not only that how do I teach him a lesson for talking to me rudely like a gunda (Not using foul language or threat) Please, please tell me what to do as he said he will be calling me tomorrow to harass me again. Please help ! ! !

Next time be careful to note the name and address of the person who is threatening you as lodging a complaint to the Police for causing this type of criminal intimidation should yield immediate result irrespective of the fact as to whether you still owe the bank any money or not.
