Sherlok holm stories

Querist : Anonymous (Querist) 30 April 2011 This query is : Resolved
I would request you to kidly advise whether the sherlokholms stories can be retold and published in india without obtaining permission. The auther was died in 1930 and whether the copy right act is still operative on the books or charectors?

Go and check from the book itself.
The publishing company must have reserved its copyrights Act violation of which may attract damages.

The default length of copyright is the life of the author plus either 50 or 70 years. In the United States, the term for most existing works is for a term ending 70 years after the death of the author. If the work was a work for hire (e.g., those created by a corporation) then copyright persists for 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication, whichever is shorter.

So, you will have to check first whether the publications of the author were published on work for hire basis from the author, or on royalty basis to decide when the copyright term would expire.
