Previous landlord withholding too much of deposit

Previous landlord blames my family for damage to granite floor (discoloration) that actually predated our moving in to this 30+yo house 5yr ago. He wants to renovate the floor and charge us so he can get a new tenant to pay a higher rent.
How can I fight this?

how much is security deposit paid by you ? what is security deposit he wants to deduct?
have you informed landlord in writing that you want to vacate premises ? at time of joint inspection did you point out that discoloration of granite predated your entry in premises?
