My lawyer charges me fees at 10 times the going rate in CASH just a day or two before the hearing date without giving me any receipt or at times on my insistence tells a clerk of his to sign on a plain piece of paper without any revenue stamp. though I have already paid him handsome advance engagement fees. Then he sends me a Bill on email without acknowledging the cash payment I have already maid to him.
Can he trouble me at a later date ? I am based in another city. Can he stop me if I want to change my lawyer ? Are there any fixed rates for lawyers fees ? Justice it seems is so very expensive that I may have to give up my case because the lawyer is fleecing me and blackmails me on the day or two before the hearing date and forces me to pay cash. How can I check him ?

If you are no more interested in your lawyer, then change your lawyer.

services of a lawyer could be availed only on good faith unlike any other service.
it is better to change your lawyer. when engaging a lawyer next time talk to him about his fees etc in advance so that you get an estimate of likely expenses.
this is the only area of service, where no "MRP" is applicable. No uniform standard.
many of them charges according to their whims and fancies.
disclaimer: this is not a general opinion of lawyer community as a whole.
