Querist : Anonymous (Querist) 02 January 2012 This query is : Resolved
I may be given to understand that what is the minimum requirement of the Age and qualifications of "Pundit Or Priest" to perform the Hindu Marriage Cermony in the Temple premises or otherwise. Is age criteria is stipulated under the provisions of law, kindly quote the provisions.
Thanks,
Nadeem Qureshi (Expert) 02 January 2012
as per my view there is no qualification & age of a pundit in legal system, it may be according to Dharmashastra.

Marriage ceremony is being done by Pandit as per Hindu rites and the qualification should be that he should be doing that and known as such.Any pandit or pujari not knowing the sacred ceremony, cannot perform it.I have not come across any such rules or regulation as it is customary. which is recognised by Samaj.

a pandit must be learned in scriptures to be able to perform the wedding rituals . not aware of any age stipulations .

There is no such law as Hinduism is not guided by any law rather it has its own internal discipline and faith. No law should guide Hinduism or Pundit or Pujari for performing marriage as it is a sacred job. Though I am not pundit even then I have also performed 2 marriages conducting my role as of Pujari/Pujari.

Both marriages are successful.

What I have to tell you is that,
The pundit who perform the rituals shall be able and eligibel to issue a certificate stating that the marriage was conducted by him in the temple which will be very useful in the event of any disputes.

But, it is true that there is no law in force governing the age of the Pundit ro perform not only marriage, but also any religious rituals.

Not agreeing with Mr nair, Thre is no such requriement of the Pandit being competent to issue any certificate. raher no such certificate is required. For recruitment as Pandit inAmry one should be qualified priest from any institution or should be Graduate in Sanskrit from any university. But for performing marriage no such qualfication is necessary. Though in practice the professional pandits are qualified by proper institutions (which is normally equal to 10+2 or graduation). As stated by Mr Makkar teue despite being lawyer he can perofrm marriage rites. Manu perons though Govt employee /lawyers / judges/ teachers/ polcemen by profession, perform marraiges by virtue of Brahmin caste and preservation of ancestral knowledge of scriptures and rituals. I have not come across any law stipulating making it necessary for Pandit to have Brahmin caste (though Army and paralamilitary forces in practice employee none else for the job). I have not even come across any law stipulating the marriage performing priest to be necesaryily Hindu (thogh practically it is difficult to find non-Hindu Pandit). Most of the Pandits are not even well versed inastrology to find auspicious time for marraige and depend upon ready made literature)

Ceremonies in hindu marriage are required to be performed according to custom of parties but no qualification of any kind for any pundit is the requirements at all but in case one thinks of any issue of certificate from pundit then of course he should be a person competent in law such as major and of sound mind.Although such certification is not any necessity any of all who joined the marriage ceremony can depose about it.All baaraatees are witness.About ceremony law speaks only this much that if where saptpadi is a custom, marriage becomes complete on seventh step taken.

saptpadi is a custom, marriage becomes complete on seventh step taken.
no qualification & age of a pundit in law

It is not hard and fast rule to establish the First Hindu Marriage.
Only in Second marriage and dispute, all rituals are examined by witnesses.
