Dear expert,

In Assam stamp duty on mortgage is same duty as a conveyance for a market value equal to the amount secured by such loan.

Does it mean stamp duty has to be paid on loan amount?

Yes. stamp duty shall be paid on loan amount taken.

It is to be paid as per prevailing law. Try to go for equitable mortgage which is equally good and without stamp duty.
