As soon as you file an appeal against the conviction order of the accused persons, you shall have to lead argument on the point of admission and once it is admitted, the punishment awarded shall stand suspended till the decision of the appeal.

Generally, an appeal to the District Court [Sessions Court] against the order of conviction passed by a Magistrate, is automatic; there is no admission mechanism. But as Mr. Makkad says, you will need to seek suspension of sentence. Almost always suspension is ordered.
