Two Wives With Mutual Consent

Querist : Anonymous (Querist) 11 April 2011 This query is : Resolved
We are a Hindu family. My sister in law underwent a painful divorce and now separated with custody of her 10 yr old son. What she has gone through and under the current situation, myself, wife and sister in law want to be together. We mutually agree for myself marrying sister in law and take entire responsibility of her and her son. Can I do so? My wife is ready to give a consent whatever way Law accepts it.

The proposal is quite foolhardy. Even with consent one cannot marry for the second time when the first wife is alive. It may backfire at any point of time. Better beware.

Is there any way to accept her and give a secure life rather than leaving her at the mercy of lustful, cruel society or force her to remarry to someone just to satisfy othrodox social norms?

To give her a secure life (if they are not prepared for re-marriage with anyone else), it is not necessary that you have to marry her. If only you are so concerned about her security in life, this can be provided by you and your wife. For this it is not necessary that you have to marry her, UNLESS YOU YOURSELF DOES NOT WANT TO PROVIDE ANY SECURITY TO HER, WITHOUT MARRYING HER!

Thanks. We want to do everything possible for her and offcourse, only if she herself is willing. We thought marrying her would be the most secure option to have a meaningful life together. The known example of having two wives with mutual consent is that of Actor Dharmendra. How that has been approved by law and society? We know few Hindu families married like this and living happily together, even they own legal properties etc on both wives names etc.

SIR,
KINDLY NOTE THAT.
1 HINDU MARRIAGE ACT DO NOT ALLOW SECOND MARRIAGE DURING LIFE TIME OF FIRST WIFE.
2.IN CASE ANY COMPLAINT IS FILED THEN THE CONCERNED WILL BE LIABLE FOR PUNISHMENT UNDER PROVISIONS OF SEC.494 OF INDIAN PENAL CODE.
3.IN CASE YOU SINCERELY WISH TO HELP THE LADY THEN YOU CAN RESIDE IN SAME HOUSE WITH YOUR WIFE WITH HER CONCENT AND PROVIDE HER ALL ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF LIFE. GOOD LUCK.

Thanks. will be thankful if you could comment on the example I stated above.

1. In illutrsted case Dharmendra convertad and became Muslim and officially he is known as Dilawar Khan but publically he is still called by general public as Dharmendra and thus managged to keep two swords in one scabbard.

2. However general public should not follow in his footsteps only if one is Garam Dharam aka Dharmendra in real life not "reel" life as both are different.

3. least to least other than physical comforts you may give SIL seperate shelter, food, medicine, education support to a 10 yrs old kid and allow your wife to stay in touch with her thus indirectly fulfilling proxy societal duties of a BIL but never marry SIL when wife is still alive.

firstly adopt the child and enter in to a MOU with your sister in law for the financial, economic support to your sister in law and in that your wife may be witness. by this you can secure your sister in law.
