Section 498 (a) of indian penal code

(Querist) 19 September 2011 This query is : Resolved
WHETHER SECTION 498 (A) OF INDIAN PENAL CODE IS COMPOUNDABLE OR NON-COMPOUNDABLE AS PER THE LATEST AMENDMENT TO THE CODE OF CRIMINAL PROCEDURE CODE
Shonee Kapoor (Expert) 19 September 2011
Only in state of Andhra Pradesh it is compoundable.

All other places it is still non-compoundable.

The latest amendment of CrPC has had no impact on the nature of 498-a.

Yes non compoundable though curiously enough if the parties reaches a settlement the high court quashes the proceedings on the basis of such settlement.
Biswanath Roy (Expert) 19 September 2011
Compoundability of an offence u/s 498A depends upon the discretion of the trial court. Vide latest cases Nita S. Tagade vs Smt Vimal S. Tagade 1997 Cr. LJ 3263, Saraswati Sutradhar and 3 others vs State 1999 Cr LJ 117 Gau
