how does a multi national company become amenable to the jurisdiction of a court?

That's too vague a question to answer. If the Cause of Action arises within India's jurisdiction - no matter where the company located it is amenable to court's jurisdiction. In Contractual matters - place of contract or place of performance (part or full) are places which have jurisdiction.

There are different angles for jurisdiction, eg., territorial jurisdiction, pecuniary jurisdiction and jurisdiction according to legally binding contracts between parties.
