Family partition deed

(Querist) 17 May 2010 This query is : Resolved 
I am in lookout for purchase of an apartment. The owner has inherited from her grand father through a panchayat partition deed which is signed by the family members but it is not registered. Is it the valid document of ownership.

No. Any property more than worth of Rs.100 transferred to any body thru, any mode requires compulsory registration u/s 17 of Indian Regn., act.

It is not a valid document of ownership. It should have been registered in the Sub-Registrar's office.
