You can prove a persons signature with the help of an expert who helps you in verifing signature and give you a written report.

Rather than proving the signature it is wise to prove that the person signing now is the same person who signed 40 yrs back, I think an notarized affidavit for the same is sufficient for that. However, your query is silent on the reason as to whom you require to prove a person's signature, signed more than 40 years back( in a Govt. school records )differs now with his present signature.

It is not exactly the similarity of signature that matters. It is the handwriting of the person who had signed earlier and whose signature is to be verified should remain the same. Finger print/Handwriting experts look into umpteen number of parameters like angles, dots, curves etc., in a detailed manner to compare the signature. Their report runs tens of pages in analysis. They are the best persons to establish the signature.
Even if the signature of the same person who signed forty years back and now differ, yet he cannot dispute his signature if it is in his own handwriting. Better go for verification from a handwriting expert.
