Pagadi system

I am staying at pagadi system room from last 20 years. The legal tenant of the room is my son in-law and as he is residing out of india, so he allowed me to stay at this place,so we are staying here from last 20 years with my son.daughter in-law and grand children and I regularly pay rent every year to the landlord on behalf of my son in-law name.
But today when I went to pay rent landlord told me that it illegal to stay like this and he will send me legal notice to empty this place.
Please advice what shall I do in this case.

Try to settle the matter amicably. The rent receipt is in the name of your son-in-law, while he is not staying there. The position is irregular.
