in criminal cases when a witness turns hostile to the prosecution side ,then prosecution is permitted to cross examine the said witness.
hostile witness means the witness who was called by the prosecution to depose in support of the prosecution ,but suddenly takes the different footings i.e supporting the defence version, then prosecution declares that witness to be a hostile one. in one word hostility means enimity or animosity.

Dear Pratik,
To supplement the reply of Mr. Indrajit, defence witness can also be cross-examined by the defence side when a defence witness is treated as hostile.
Cross-examination of witnesses is allowed in any case where witnesses are produced by any side to give oral evidence about the case.
