Seniority

(Querist) 16 June 2010 This query is : Resolved
Hello,

I am completing my LLB and will start practicing as an advocate next year. So, my enrollment will be effective April' 2011 for example.

Now, if I go to work for a law firm in 2012, I understand that I have to report this to the bar council and suspend my license. My question is that I want to appear for judicial services exams later. If I continue to work for the law firm until I take my judicial exams (example, ADJ requires 7 years of experience), will my law firm experience count, or will they look at my 1 year enrollment in the bar council and reject me? How is the seniority calculated for something like this?

Thank you,
Kumar

Dear kumar,

Since you are going to work in a lawfirm (assuming the work in law firm to be only attending and appearing in courts as a lawyer) in such cases you need not report this to the bar council and suspend your licence. Only in case of joining in companies nder the rolls of the company as a full time salaried employee you need to inform the bar council and seek the suspension of your licence.

Best regards,,

Dear Kumar,

I fully concur with Mr.R.R.Krishna and would like to suggest that pursuant to your enrolment you may become member of the local Bar Association as well.

All the very best for all your future professional endeavours.

Best Regards

Daksh

Thank you very much to everybody who responded with your answers. But, I am still a little confused. If I go to a law firm (just for example purposes, if this is a firm like Amarchand Mangaldas), and they allocate me to transactional work, will I then have to forfeit my license?
