Company law- alternate director

In a private limited company there are two directors both are foreign nationals. most of the times they are not present in India for the board meetings to be conducted as per the applicable sections. therefore one alternate director was appointed in place of one of the director but then the other director is still not available for BOD meetings and demanding that an alternate director be appointed in his place as well.
condition being that the first directors do not want to leave their hold from the company and are not even willing to appoint an additional director as well...
Is it valid to appoint two alternate directors in place of the only two first directors of the company???
and if it valid how long this setup can be applicable???

I actually think it would be taking things too far
