Claiming house rent exemption/rebate at the time of return

Querist : Anonymous (Querist) 07 April 2022 This query is : Resolved
Respected Experts,

I have not claimed HRA exemption/rebate at the time of TDS from my salary in FY 2021-22. Can I claim HRA exemption/rebate at the time of filing IT return? My house rent per month is Rs.13500. I don't have rent agreement but I can show rent receipts and may pursue landlord to show his income from rent in his own IT return.

Regards
Quick Summary
If you didn't claim your House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption when your employer deducted TDS for FY 2021-22, you can still claim it when filing your Income Tax Return (ITR). While a rent agreement is ideal, rent receipts and your landlord's cooperation in declaring the rent income can support your claim. It's advisable to secure these documents to satisfy tax authorities.

You are entitled for rebate in tax therefore, include it in your ITR. However, it is better to execute a rent agreement with your landlord and request him / her for rent receipts since the government departments are controlled by Babus (bureaucrats) who insist on evidence.

Yes. I agree with the advice of the above learned expert Dr.JC Vashista sir.
