membership in country club

Sir,
I have joined in Country club on 8th April 2005, based on the leaflet advertisement shown by their marketing agent. I was requested by them subsequently to make payment for the membership. I went to the club premises at Guindy, Chennai and I made the payment through my cr.card. After that I visited the club and found nothing is free for the members and we were asked to pay for any kind of use. Only the Gymnasium was there and it was not sufficient to accommodate the members at a time. I was not impressed and asked them to cancel my membership and refund my amount paid. They promised the club will get improvement soon after getting some more members. I wrote a letter and sent them an email also(during April and May 2005 itself) for cancelling the membership. I had never used the club on any occassion. Now they have sent me a letter consolidating the annual maintenance fees to be paid by me. What can I do? Please explain in detail. Thanking you for your valuable advise and guidance.

Mr.Thangadurai, please reply to the Club's letter stating that you had already cancelled the membership way back in April/May 2005, and that you are not obliged to pay up any fee. Subsequently, do approach an advocate who could file a case against the Club under the Consumer Protection Act for lack of deficiency of service and misrepresentation.

You would have signed an application form and an agreement while getting admitted as Memebr of the Club. Pl chaeck the same to find out whether u are entitled to cancell the Membership and if so with what consequenses. Based on the above u may contest the claim made by the Club for annual maintenance charges.

Thank you Ms.Veeda Mirzakar and Mr.M.V.Gupta for your replies for my question. I did sign an application that contains no cancellation procedure. But I sent an email that I was not satisfied with the club and wanted to cancel my membership. I had never attended the club. Am I bound to pay the annual maintenance fees? Please reply.
