Purchasing a land from sc/st for personal housing purpose

Hello members,

Can i purchase a land from SC/ST caste people for personal housing purpose ? The plot earlier was an agricultural field and later was declared into residential by the sellers and now the plot comes under Gram Sabha. The plot is located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Please suggest , Can i buy it and will it be properly legal ?

deal carefully. If the sale turns out to illegal (due to bar on purchase of SC/ST land by non-SC/ST) in some states the seller may not be bound to refund the cost and you may be liable to return the land.

Thanks for the quick response. I heard that agricultural field can't be purchased from SC/ST , but what about if the land is converted into Residential from the sellers itself ? In that case , the deal will be legal or not ?

Please clear my doubt.
