Murder convict gets grace for hangman's absence in Assam
President Pratibha Patil rejected the mercy petitions of two convicts on Friday (May 27), Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar of Punjab and Mahender Nath Das of Assam, clearing the way for their execution. Mahender, however, got some grace period inadvertently as there is no hangman in Assam. "After rejection of mercy plea of Mahender Nath Das by the President of India, he was shifted to our jail from Guwahati Central Jail in order to execute his punishment, but as there is no hangmen in the state, the exact date of execution yet to be fixed," said B Das, jailer of Jorhat jail. In the meanwhile, Mahender is spending his days in Jorhat jail, going about his daily duties just like a common inmate, showing little emotion, even though he knows his days are numbered. Mahender, a resident of Chenga area in Barpeta district, was found guilty of murdering one Harakanta Das in 1996. The 45-year-old bachelor, to be survived by his mother and two sisters, was convicted to be hanged until death under section 302 of IPC at Jorhat jail. He was shifted to the jail from Guwahati for the execution of his punishment, the Jorhat jail being the only hanging site in the state. Jorhat jail authorities said Mahender seemed very cool-headed and was behaving absolutely normal. "Mahender, in Jorhat jail since last Friday, is taking his meals regularly and is going to bed and waking up on time. In fact, no sign of his apprehensions, if any, has been reflected in his behaviour yet," said jailer Das.
